Lan Keenan

Lan Keenan earned their Juris Doctor and a Certificate in Aboriginal and Indigenous Law from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University. Lan practices across the HRM, Colchester County, Cumberland County, and throughout rural Nova Scotia, focusing on family law, criminal law, probate, civil litigation, property law, administrative law, and residential tenancy matters.

Lan represents clients in a wide variety of matters, including guardianship applications, contract disputes, business litigation, estate disputes, and residential tenancy issues. Their experience also includes preparing deeds, wills, powers of attorney, land migration, and advising on family law issues. In criminal matters, Lan has appeared in Domestic Violence Court, Wellness Court, and Mental Health Court, advocated for disability-related diversion programs, and worked on matters under the Adult Capacity and Decision-Making Act.

Lan’s legal work at Dalhousie Legal Aid and the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Social Justice Office involved a mixture of child protection, criminal, social justice, and administrative law practice. They have handled Employment Insurance appeals, income assistance appeals, and post-secondary disciplinary appeals.

Lan completed articles with Creighton Shatford in Amherst, gaining experience in both litigation and solicitor matters. Their work included guardianship applications, contract disputes, business litigation, estate disputes, and residential tenancy disputes, as well as real property and estate planning matters such as preparing deeds, wills, and powers of attorney, handling property sales, and advising on tax law issues. This exposure to a busy and varied general practice reinforced the importance of a client-centred approach.

Before entering the legal profession, Lan spent more than seven years in health, education, and social services, supporting individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities—experience that continues to shape their accessible and compassionate approach to advocacy. In their off hours, Lan enjoys writing music, exploring local cuisine, and unwinding with a good board game.
